Baking Soda Bubbles

Sent in by:
Dudley and Kitty Katswell

Can ya' keep Bubbles from popping?

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Bubbles and a Bubble Wand
  • Containers
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
WHAT TO DO:

Check with a grown-up before you begin.Put 1/4 cup baking soda in a clear container. Then add 1 cup of vinegar. The mixture of vinegar and baking soda will bubble. It's making carbon dioxide.Blow some bubbles into the container and watch how they float on the carbon dioxide. The bubbles are floating where the carbon dioxide and air meet. The carbon dioxide stays at the bottom of the bowl because it is more dense than the air in the bowl. The bubbles float on top of the carbon dioxide because they are filled with air and the air is less dense than the carbon dioxide. This will help explain what density means. Pretend that you had two balloons and you filled one with air, and the other one with the same amount of carbon dioxide. The balloons would be the same size, because the gas in them takes up the same amount of space. But, if you weighed both balloons, the one with the carbon dioxide would be heavier. This means that it's denser than the balloon with air in it.If you still don't understand density, don't worry. There are lots of people out there who can answer your questions. Talk to your teacher, go to a science museum, visit your local library, or ask your parents.

My favorite sandwich is jalapeños, salami, bologna, cheese, ham, oil and vinegar, but if I could only take three foods to the moon, I'd take: tacos, spinach, and French meat pie. Even though some of my favorite books are The BFG and the Goosebumps Series, if I could be any character from a book, I'd be Pippi Longstocking because she gets in awesome adventures.

My whole family just fits together. My Mom and Dad are great together, and my sisters are the best. They're all the most important people in my life. They're wacky and fun, very cool to be around. We say two prayers a day, love to go to the beach and eat out at restaurants.

Fringed Felt Duster

This easy-to-make felt duster is designed to let your little worker bee get a handle on helping to keep her own digs in tiptop shape.

Stack the felt rectangles on top of one another with the longer edges at the top and the bottom. Fold the stack in thirds so that the sides overlap across the middle.
Bunch together the top of the folded stack and wrap the rubber band around it to hold it.
Fringe the felt, making the strips 3/4 to 1 inch wide and stopping your cuts 1 1/2 inches below the rubber band.
Finally, wrap a piece of ribbon around the rubber band to cover it, and tie the ends into a bow.

After Image

Sent in by: Danny

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • White Paper
  • Black Green and Oranger Markers
WHAT TO DO:

  1. Take two pieces of white paper and draw a spooky ghost with a black marker on one.
  2. Stare at the ghost for about thirty seconds and then quickly look at the blank piece of white paper.
  3. See what happens.
  4. Now try it with an American Flag colored green, orange and black.
  5. You probably can guess what colors will show up after you stare at it.
  6. When you stare at these pictures for a long time, the picture that you see after you look at something white is called an after image.
  7. If the colors of the after image and the colors of the original picture are mixed together, they make a dull gray color.
  8. So, if you mix the color of the ghost, black, with the color of its after image, bright white, those two colors make gray.

Room Decorator

Sent in by:
Erynn of Coventry, RI
WHAT YOU NEED:
  • Wooden Yardstick
  • Clothespins
  • White Glue
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
WHAT TO DO:

  1. Paint your yardstick any color you want. Let it dry.
  2. While the yardstick is drying, paint your clothespins. Be creative and have fun.
  3. When everything is dry, glue the clothespins to the yardstick. Leave some space in between each clothespin. Let it dry.
  4. When it's dry you're ready to hang it. You might want to ask an adult to help you select a place to hang it. Some yardsticks come with holes in them. If your yardstick has holes already in it, you can hang it up with pushpins in the holes.
  5. You can use your room decorator to hang your notes, school papers, pictures, or anything else you want.

Deliver a Message

WHAT YOU NEED:

pencil
paper
empty water bottles

WHAT TO DO:
Check with a grown-up before you get started.

When you're stranded on a deserted island, you can't use a telephone or e-mail to communicate. So how would you get a message to a friend on the other side of your island?

Use your imagination and design a delivery system that gets messages from one place to another. If you want to try this with friends, split into teams and design ways to deliver messages to each other. The catch is, you can't throw your message to the other team, and you can't just get up and walk over with it.

Use materials you find around the house to build your message delivery system. Then, write a message and try it out! If the other team can receive and read your message, the design was successful.Compare designs. What advantages does each design have? Can you improve on your design, or make a new one? Can you find a way to get a note to your friend across the street - or send a message to someone downstairs without having to leave your room? Test out your ideas, and be sure to send your results to Seven Fun Friends
